Do you know Rails Rumble or Node Knockout?
They are both 48-hour long, on-line competitions, or hackathons if you wish
for the respective communities. They build beautiful things during these competitions.
It's time time that we, in the Perl community will have our own competition!
Let me announce the Perl Maven Competition

Last week I posted a list of the most popular perl-related web sites based
on their Alexa rating. Apparently I missed quite a few Perl-based open source products. Many thanks to the people who
sent me the links!
This time I put together the list of the 23 Perl-based open source products. I was especially interested
in products serving the more generic public. Not just other Perl developers.

August was a hot month and I spent a week in Germany. That started out as cool and nice
and ended as too hot.
I also published 15 articles.

Sometimes people ask me: How many people are in the Perl community?
If this happens at a YAPC or a Perl Workshop I might ask back: What is the Perl community?
or Who is in the Perl community?.
If this is in a Perl training class, especially in a beginner
level training class, I cannot do that. I need to come up with a number and 42 does not work well.

At the end of April 2012 I collected some data on the number of members of
the Google+ and Facebook pages of Perl projects.
I left out LinkedIN but as Gautam Dey also mentioned, it would be interesting to see the numbers there too.

When showing examples in Perl I have a huge problem.
On one hand, I'd like to show only really good stuff, that assumes a recent version of perl with recent modules from CPAN.
That's what the so called Modern Perl or Enlightened Perl movements promote.
On the other hand I'd like to be useful to people working in the real world.
